Each and every quarter, SafeHighways.org is looking for new and exciting information about Safety Service Patrols and new ways to share it with our readers. The second quarter of 2011 was no different, and SafeHighways.org is excited to have concluded another issue of Safe Highway Matters that looks at the training of Safety Service Patrol drivers.

The importance of thorough training methods and on-going training opportunities of Safety Service Patrol drivers cannot be emphasized enough. We would like to thank those professionals involved in the training of SSP drivers for taking the time to speak with Safe Highway Matters and sharing their approaches to safety training. We appreciate the time Paul Jodoin of the FHWA, Joseph Sagal of Maryland State Highway Administration, Daniel Hester of Georgia DOT, Mark Taylor of Dallas County’s Sherriff’s Department and Randy Bybee of the Nebraska State Patrol dedicate to the training of SSP drivers. Starting with the shared knowledge of these professionals, SafeHighways.org hopes to expand the conversation of driver training and to encourage officials to openly communicate about best practices for training. A special thanks to Jack Sullivan, Director of Training with the Emergency Responder Safety Institute, for working with Safe Highway Matters on this article and for supplying additional resources to share with our readers.

Readers of Safe Highway Matters and visitors to SafeHighways.org will find new additions to our Resources page. It was recently updated this quarter with new studies, guides and training manuals as well as an open forum for traffic incident management professionals to exchange information and ask questions of other patrols. There are some open, lingering questions currently posted that could benefit from your input!

We continue to update our Twitter and Facebook pages regularly and are always interested in promoting news items and updates to Safety Service Patrols. Please contact us to get the word out about recent developments with your Safety Service Patrol. As always, we encourage our readers to discuss the issues and articles found within this and previous editions of Safe Highway Matters and to share your thoughts with our staff. We look forward to hearing from you.

Wishing you safe travels,

Rita Gallagher
